We started a degree of self government in 2001, and meetings are carried
out on a monthly basis. This was begun to give the children at the center
a role to play in the management of the institution, and so that their
needs are better reflected. This self-governing association is called
the "Kabutsomushi Meeting", and the chairman and the vice president
(elected by the children) select the meals they want to eat, and the toys
they would like purchased, for example. At the Kohitsuji Center, as well
as looking after children with intellectual disabilities on a daily basis,
we offer development assistance to help them cope with daily life.

Many of those who have completed their education at the high school work
at the facility, doing agricultural work, creative rehabilitation activities, gardening,
beadwork, and paper and ceramic handicrafts. The handicarfts they make
are unique and reflect the individual character of the maker. If you are
interested, you are more than welcome to drop by and see the work they
are doing.
There are also a number of events at the Kohitsuji Center depending on
the season, which the children are actively involved in. Every summer the
children, their families and the staff travel together, as a bonding experience
for everyone. In 2003 we went to Nakagawa Aquarium in Tochigi Prefecture
and saw lots of beautiful fish. We stayed at Kyororin Village on the Kine
plateau and had a barbecue and played with fireworkds. The children always
enjoy such trips and look forward to them each year.
At the Kohitsuji Center we are interested in your opinions and your feedback, and
will respond swiftly. If you have any ideas that you think will contribute
to making
our Center an even better place for the children, we look forward to hearing
from you.
